A: Garbage disposals are a practical and environmentally responsible way to help reduce the impact of food waste in landfills. Food scraps alone, represent more than 31 million tons of solid waste generated in the US each year.

In landfills food scraps decompose very quickly and produce methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas at least 21 times more potent in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

Since food waste is mostly water (70%), it makes sense to grind it up in your disposal and send it to municipal waste water treatment plants.
