Q: What Causes the Loud Banging Noise in my home's pipes?
A: The problem you are describing could be something called a water hammer. This banging can occur on a normal faucet, but is more commonly found on pipes attached to a washing machine or dishwasher. In both of these machines, the valve is electronically operated. In the pipe, the momentum of the water is carried at a rapid speed. When the valve closes, the water comes to a sudden halt, causing the pipe system to move forward. It is the shifting of the pipe that makes the banging noise.
